Frequently asked questions

License your brand

Brand licensing partners enjoy zero up-front costs, as DoorDash takes on the financial and operational risk.

Depending on the location, DoorDash either hires cooks or partners with a culinary operator (e.g., Á La Couch) to staff our kitchen facilities. We also hire managers for each of our facilities as well as front-of-house staff to supervise delivery and pickup orders.

We’ve established a culinary team to support our partners’ brands led by Chef Carl Bertka, former head of culinary development at Ruby Tuesday and former pastry chef at Gordon Ramsay at The London. The culinary team has a mix of fine dining, casual dining, corporate foodservice, and catering experience to handle all of our brands’ cuisine types and operating needs.

Ahead of the launch, you will provide a list of ingredients and preferred sourcers to ensure consistency with your other stores’ menus. Over the course of a few weeks, you’ll be actively engaged in both determining the menu and training DoorDash Kitchens staff to prepare, plate, and package the high-quality food expected from your brand. Once launched, DoorDash will manage the day-to-day of the operations of the facility.

Ship items nationwide

At this time, we facilitate shipment to customers in the contiguous United States (i.e., 48 states not including Hawaii or Alaska). Note that we are able to ship items to APO/FPO addresses, but not PO Boxes.

Restaurants can choose between the following operating models:

  • Retail Dropship: You make products fresh and dropship packages directly from your existing retail or commissary kitchen locations. You purchase all packaging and shipping independently and will coordinate with your preferred shipping provider.

  • Shipping Support: You make products fresh and dropship packages directly from your existing retail or commissary kitchen locations. You purchase all packaging but DoorDash generates shipping labels and coordinates with Fedex/UPS on your behalf.

We currently partner with FedEx and UPS, primarily using 2-day or next-day shipping to ensure your products arrive fresh.

Launch a virtual brand

Licensing an existing virtual brand allows restaurants to generate additional revenue with a delivery-focused concept while using your current kitchen, staff, and equipment. This is a good option for operators who want to launch a virtual restaurant but don’t want to spend time developing a completely new concept, brand, and menu.

On average, merchants can generate anywhere from 15-35% incremental profitability by licensing an existing virtual brand.

DoorDash will help you find the right virtual restaurant concept, connect you with partners, and set up your DoorDash listing. We’ll also support you by:

  1. Providing an established supply chain so you can procure necessary ingredients with minimal effort.

  2. Developing resources and training to help your staff understand the culinary processes for the virtual brand you’ve chosen to license.

  3. Offering DoorDash-funded marketing support to drive awareness about your virtual brand in your area.

Just like for brick-and-mortar partners, DoorDash charges a per-order commission on orders placed for virtual brands through our platform. The commission on your licensed virtual brand will be the same as your brick-and-mortar restaurant. Learn more about DoorDash Partnership Plans & Pricing.

Rent a virtual kitchen

Your success is important to us, and our selection process is focused on bringing in top brands with high-quality food. Restaurants interested in renting space in one of DoorDash’s ghost kitchen locations should have a plan to achieve sales of $2,000/day.

DoorDash’s kitchen spaces house between 4-10 potential units.

DoorDash kitchens include a ready-to-go space — including a hood, 3-compartment sink, gas/water lines, and utilities. Restaurants are responsible for providing staff as well as any additional equipment needed for their specific cuisine or brand.

DoorDash kitchen partners will appear on the DoorDash platform, just like any other restaurant partner. Customers in the area will be able to discover your restaurant and place orders via our app or website. We also offer co-funded marketing efforts such as emails, push notifications, and in-app Ads and Promotions.
